[edit] Background and past

Liesl Thistledown grew up on the outskirts of a small farming community outside of Cloptonmore. Her parents worked the land and she learned the ways of a farmer and blacksmith at a young age. As a small child, she was beguiled by her elderly grandfather's stories of his life as an adventurer. This elderly cleric of Enlil introduced Liesl to the faith that she would eventually choose as her own.

After a local influenza epidemic resulted in the deaths of her close kin, and the onset of strange visions of a religious nature, she decided to follow in her grandfather's footsteps and set off into the world.

Liesl traveled to the capitol city of Jarrowby, where she obtained a room in the worst district in town, an area overrun with thieves and footpads, beggars, orphans, and footpads who steal orphaned beggars. Despite being a country lass at heart, Liesl's skill with martial weapons allowed her to take a job with the city watch. She initially enjoyed the job, because it allowed her to meet a wide variety of individuals within the city, and to enforce the law to the best of her ability.

After nearly two years of working for the watch, however, Liesl came to believe that the life of a city guard was not for her. She was saddened by the inability of the law to protect the poor and disenfranchised. Severe crimes committed by the aristocracy were overlooked and ignored while unreasonable, cripping punishments were enforced on the lower classes, worsening the debt and squalor that led them to commit crime (usually petty theft) in the first place.

During this time, Liesl continued to live in spartan solitude, investing little in material possessions and giving all of her salary not spent on basic living expenses to the poor of the city. She cut a strange figure--neighbors grew used to the sight of a large, armored woman bringing a small bag of food, as much as she could afford on her small salary, to the poor or the sick, perhaps a small child clad in rags perched on her shoulders, and another one clamped on to her calf, laughing as they recieved a short ride down a dingy alleyway.

The conflict between her duty as a member of the watch, her personal feelings about justice and mercy, and the onset of strange dreams and visions led Liesl to the church of Enlil, who her grandfather had also followed many years before. She had encountered them before while doing charitable work in Jarrowby, as the god of wanderers also embraces those with no home and little means.

While interested in serving Enlil, the elders of the church in Jarrowby felt that her path did not lay on that of a cleric, so she accepted a position as a lay follower. One of her first assignments was to accompany Laucian on his mission to Darklingscourse.

Liesl stands a little under six feet tall and is a fairly substantial woman, probably weighing at least 160 lbs. She is not conventionally attractive and rather more physically imposing than generally expected from women in her part of the world, but she possesses a kind of personal magnetism and unusual charm that makes people more incined to trust her. While not immediately comely, something about her personality allows her to establish an immediate rapport with most people, and has earned her a fair number of admirers, though she seems to be currently uninterested in any romantic relations.

Her hair has gone prematurely white and she keeps it braided and back to not interfere in battle. She has a myriad of scars, large and small, from various conflicts, including several on her face and hands.

Liesl loves children and generally carries some form of candy and small change on her person to give out as treats.
