[edit] Solomon Knotbeard
Solomon Knotbeard is a sturdy, bookish dwarf.
[edit] Background and past
A native of Serriyam, Solomon grew up different from many of his dwarven contemporaries as he is not terribly skilled in any kind of martial combat. Undeterred, he used his cognitive gifts to learn how to make himself uniquely powerful among dwarves through arcane spellcraft. He was the head of an arcane library in Serriyam until it was shut down and emptied by Omil's followers. It was this injustice that drew Solomon to the Serryic Knights. Solomon is absolutely terrified of devils and wears a robe of fire protection in case he ever comes across one.
[edit] Biographic Details
Solomon’s great grandfather and namesake, Solomon Kilrudikud, settled in Serriyam about 250 years ago, after the Great War. He found it a good place to settle in the chaotic aftermath in Kadaras and found Urok Bletter to be a fair and charismatic leader in the troubling times. He spent the rest of his life working in the city guard and even helped build the walls that surround the city. Now 320 years old, he lives with Solomon’s parents in Serriyam. Solomon’s father, Attir Knotbeard, is a well-established mason in Serriyam, though his craft has been somewhat diminished since the city descended into martial rule. Now that her children are grown, Solomon’s mother, Cerol Knotbeard, spends her days practicing several crafts out of the home, which she makes available for sale. Solomon’s younger brother, Dunash, works in Serriyam as a blacksmith. Solomon and his parents are somewhat in conflict with Dunash since he helped Omil through his smithing, though they all realize that it was what he had to do to earn his living in spite of his distaste for the man. Solomon has not told his family of his involvement with the Serryic Knights, largely to protect them, but also because he prefers his autonomy.
Solomon didn’t fit in with his parents’ preconceived notions as he grew up. He learned to read at an extremely precocious age and never turned back, ignoring the sports, hobbies, and social activities common to his fellow young dwarves. As people with a fairly simple and straightforward outlook on life, Solomon’s parents lined him up in a variety of apprenticeships when he was young. While working under blacksmiths, masons, dockworkers, guards, and even farmers, Solomon never really excelled in any manual pursuits. He spent his free time at the city libraries and found excuses to abandon his apprenticeships frequently. At wits’ end, Solomon’s parents focused their energies on his younger brother, hoping that they could get one right. Solomon’s father earned enough to sustain the family even though Solomon still had no gainful employment into his early adulthood.
Finally, after Solomon had spent years haunting the local libraries and going so far as to volunteer at one focusing on matters arcane, a head librarian offered him a job. Solomon’s parents, while still confused, were supportive that he’d finally managed to get some sort of work, even if it wasn’t what they prescribed. Solomon buried himself in the library more than ever, studying history, science, the planes, philosophy, theology, and learning of the great mages who used to roam the continent before the Great War. It was when Omil’s rise threatened his library that Solomon began to wonder if he was suited for some greater purpose. Solomon threw himself fully into the studies of arcane magic, determined to use his passion for learning to gain him power to protect that which he considered to be vital and worthy: knowledge. While largely self-taught, he gained the tutelage of Torikfeld Belachelijke-Achternaam, a gnomish mage of Serriyam, for additional help and guidance as he learned how to manipulate magical forces. During this process, Solomon took charge of an arcane library in the Enlightenment District and used it to expand his knowledge of both arcana and the planes through research and scientific experimentation.
After Omil shut down Solomon’s library, he turned to the Serryic Knights, hoping that through aiding them he could restore Serriyam to the place of learning and enlightenment that Urok Bletter once dreamed it could be.
[edit] Description
Short and dense, Solomon stands about 4 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs about 190 pounds. While not physically imposing, he is significantly sturdier than your average mage and can even be somewhat nimble in a pinch. While extremely well-read and sharp, he is not terribly well-spoken or hygienic. Due to this, he makes bad first impressions a fair amount of the time. One has to get to know him to really appreciate his gifts and intentions; a bit of a challenge considering his intense introversion. His quest to make the world safe for knowledge, however, brings him out of his shell from time to time.
[edit] Religious feelings
Solomon approaches religion academically, as he does with most everything. However, he was powerfully affected by Enroch when he came into contact with Gron's pillar. It is unclear whether or not this affected his religious feelings. Solomon was raised worshipping the same god as his parents, one favored by dwarves, but never really took to the faith as he was not keen on many of the trades and pursuits traditionally associated with his race.
