The Watchman

The Watchman is an enigmatic figure who stands at an intersection of roads on the island of Life on The Shores.

The adventurers spoke with the Watchman for some time. This is a partial transcript:

> 'Are you eternal? Have you always been here? Were you created? By what?'

"Eternal with respect to what? I've been here as long as there's been a 'here.' I'm just as much a part of this place as the ground you stand on, and the sky above your head.

"As for the question of by whom or what I was created, one must ask how The Shores were created. That is knowledge beyond my purpose."

> Why is it that people who die arrive in this place called "life"?

"Like those on your home plane, people here move through birth, life and death. However, birth, life, and death are not stages here, but sources and destinations. Souls arrive at The Shores during their journeys. Some are seeking peace. Some are seeking rebirth. Many do not know what they seek. This is a place between places. There are many connections to other domains of the non-living, and sometimes, planes of the living.

"Many who are lost never make it to these shores. They sail about in ships on these seas until they find their way. The lighthouses help guide them."

The Watchman falls silent for several moments.

"I do not know why people arrive here. It is my purpose only to help guide them on their way."

He dispassionately adds, "I have faltered in that."

> Do you know what might have brought us here? What?

"I do not."

> Has anyone else ever washed up on the shore as we did? Who?

"Only those who did not reach this place by normal means. Who, it is not my place to say, though you are not the first followers of Enlil, nor are followers of Enlil the only ones to arrive as you have."

> Do you know Enlil?

"I know of Enlil, yes. As the god of travelers, his influence is well known here."

> So we are to choose which light house to fix. Can you tell me the > differences between the islands of birth and death? Or, at least the > differences between those who come here from birth and those who come here > from death?

The Watchman seems to contemplate your question for a moment.

"This realm is a mirror of life. The death lighthouse brings to the shore new travelers. The birth lighthouse guides those already on their journey.

"Are you looking to begin your journey, or are you looking to complete something started long ago? Consider this well."
